Welcome to SwimWarrior, a mobile gamification platform for competitive swimmers and coaches.
What is Gamification?
Gamification is the application of video game design elements to non-game contexts. Examples include scoring systems, levels, virtual rewards, leaderboards, progress bars, etc. These elements help frame a situation as a game and improve engagement. For more information on this subject, check out our ASCA article.
How does the app work?
Swimmers and Coaches download the app, create their accounts and request access to a team using a "team code." Coaches then time their swimmers using a built-in stopwatch in 16 sprint events. These events are a 25, 50, 75 and 100 of each stroke. Once a time is submitted, it is converted into a score with a rank and a badge. Each event is ranked separately. The combination of the 4 events for a particular stroke make up a swimmer's stroke rank. The combination of all 16 events make up the swimmer's total rank. Swimmers are placed on a leaderboard from highest to lowest rank, making it easy to track the skill level of your team in real-time! For more information on the ranking system, check out this post.
Getting started with the app.
SwimWarrior is available on both the Apple and Google Stores, so no matter what device you or your swimmers have, the app will work for you. Start by downloading the app. Once downloaded, signup using a phone number, google account, apple id or facebook account. Fill out the details of your account. If you are creating the team, select create team. If you are joining a team, select join team. When creating a team, the app will ask for a "team code." This code is used by the other coaches and swimmers to request access to your team. We recommend that your team code is short and easy to remember. Once you register your team, your coaches and swimmers are ready to signup, request access and start playing!
Setting up training groups.
Training groups are an important part of the app. For coaches, training groups help organize and filter results. For swimmers, the default view for all leaderboards (both tournaments and overall) is training group. The reason for this is so that swimmers see their results based on others of similar skill level, however swimmers may also see their results based on the entire team. To set up training groups, tap the team tab and select "groups." Tap the "Create group" button, name your group and tap the arrow to finish creating the group. You will now see your training group at the top of the page. Tap the group to see its details. There are no swimmers in the group by default. Tap the icon in the top right to add swimmers to the group. You will be presented with a list of all swimmers on your team that are not currently assigned to a training group. Tap "add" to add a swimmer to the group. Once you add a swimmer to a training group they cannot be added to another unless they are removed from the group. To remove a swimmer from a group, swipe to the left of the user on the training group details page and select "remove." Setup all of your training groups and you are ready to play!
Timing swimmers using the built-in stopwatch.
Timing your swimmers is easy! Tap the record tab to get started. Select the event by tapping the stroke and distance, then tap "Select Swimmers." You will now be presented with a list of all swimmers on your team. Tap a swimmers name to select them, you can select up to 8 swimmers to time at once. We recommend timing around 4 swimmers at a time. An easier way to select swimmers is to use the filter. Filter by training group, age, gender and skill level. Also, using the search bar to type the first few characters of a swimmer, selecting them and then pressing the "x" icon (repeat for all swimmers) is the quickest way to select swimmers you wish to time! Once you have selected the swimmers, tap "Time event."
